150th Anniversary of the "Cloud Forest Temple"

  • Joss House State Historic Park Main Street Weaverville, CA USA (map)

The California State Parks will be Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the “Temple of the Forest Beneath the Clouds” at Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Taoist temple, built in 1874, is the oldest continuously used Chinese temple in California. A traditional lion dance will be performed to help celebrate the anniversary.

Chinese believe the lions will preserve peace and tranquility in the community and prevail over all evil to bring joy and happiness to the community. For the first time, a Chinese dragon will visit Weaverville to celebrate the temple's anniversary and the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. The lion dance and dragon performance will be dependent on good weather. After the lion dance, visitors will be treated to a traditional firecracker display and can enjoy tea tasting and fortune cookies provided by the Weaverville Joss House Association. Celebrations will include a ceremony, temple art for all ages, and temple tours.

The historic park is in downtown Weaverville at the corner of Main and Oregon Streets. For more information about the event, call the park at (530) 623-5284 or check the Weaverville Joss House SHP Facebook page.
